Organization-led courses and programs that promote mental health and wellbeing

Mental health support for physicians should be available from the very start of their career journey. Organization-led courses and programs, such as the Faculty Wellness Program (FWP) under the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine, target resident wellness by promoting mental health, raising awareness about physician burnout and how to prevent it, as well as guiding residents on how to manage emotions and control stress. Group activities and seminars help address medical system and culture issues. Furthermore, medical schools should incorporate resiliency curricula into training programs to provide help and support for residents as well as reduce stigma surrounding mental health challenges and seeking professional help. Extending these interventions outside of Faculty programs may be beneficial in supporting practicing physicians’ wellbeing too.
