Canadian Women in Medicine
Canadian Women in Medicine is a not-for-profit organization created by women physicians for women physicians. It strives to connect female physicians across Canada to support them in their professional lives and advocate for a safe and equitable work environment.
Stigma related to men’s mental health problems is pervasive in medical work culture. Concern and fear of repercussions for their professional careers and their colleagues’ and patients’ perceptions of them often impede male physicians from addressing their mental health issues and accessing support. Developing men-only hubs for mental health coping strategies could promote wellness and resilience amongst male physicians.
Many of our female interview participants expressed the need for specific accommodations and support – such as lactation facilities – for women health professionals returning to work from maternity leaves. The following guide from the American Academy of Family Physicians provides recommendations and requirements for lactation rooms in hospitals for medical trainees, but adoption of these guidelines could also benefit practising physicians. Availability of day-care facilities in or close to hospitals and clinics may also be beneficial for physicians and their families.
